BMW X5: Connecting Rod With Bearing

REPLACING ALL CONROD BEARINGS (N62/N62TU)

Special tools required:

(piston removed)

IMPORTANT: Note grinding stages on crankshaft.

The letter (1) denotes the crankshaft construction stage.

The numbers (2) denote the bearing shell classification for the relevant bearing position from 1 to 5 (main bearing cap).

Install new conrod bearing shells.

Insert one red and one blue bearing shell for each conrod.

Install piston.

Check connecting-rod bearing clearance:

Piston in BDC position.

Fit special tool 00 2 590 (Plastigage Type PG 1) to the oil-free crankshaft.

Fit bearing caps so that pair numbers match up.

IMPORTANT: Do not distort conrods or crankshaft.

Use conrod bolts to check conrod bearing clearance.

Tighten down conrod bolts with special tool 00 9 120 or special tool 11 2 110.

Tightening torque 11 24 1AZ.

Remove bearing cap and read off bearing play at width of flattened plastic thread with assistance of measurement scale.

Conrod bearing clearance.

Tighten down conrod bolts with special tool 00 9 120 or special tool 11 2 110.

Tightening torque 11 24 1AZ.

NOTE: Following repairs, the corrosion protection work already begins with the correct removal of the PVC undercoating, antinoise compound and seam seals. 1.0 Removing sealing materials: IMPORTANT: Do not burn off PVC material with a gas burner or similar or heat to temperatures above 180ºC.
