BMW X5: Mufflers

REPLACING REAR MUFFLER (N62TU)

Special tools required:

WARNING: Scalding hazard! Only perform these tasks after exhaust system has cooled down.

Support exhaust system with special tool 31 2 220.

NOTE: If the cutting lines are not identified by notches in the pipes, they must be determined by means of the pipe lengths on the new rear muffler (2).

Carry over cutting lines to faulty rear muffler (2) and mark out.

Cut both exhaust pipes at marked points with special tool 00 2 210 and deburr.

NOTE: Secure exhaust system against falling off. Release screws and remove holder (1). See Fig. 17. Tightening torque 18 20 2A.

Release screws and remove holder (1). See Fig. 18.

Tightening torque 18 20 3A.

Texts refer to and illustrations show the left side. The procedure is identical for the right side. Lower and remove exhaust system with assistance of a second person.

Installation:

Connect front muffler to rear muffler by means of clamps and align.

Centre clamps and tighten down.

Tightening torque 18 20 5A

Installation:

Align both tail pipes (1) of rear muffler are centrally situated in openings in rear apron.

NOTE: Check rubber mount for damage and replace if necessary.

Check exhaust system for leaks.

REPLACING FRONT MUFFLER (N62TU)

Special tools required:

WARNING: Scalding hazard! Only perform these tasks after exhaust system has cooled down.

Support exhaust system with special tool 31 2 220.

Cut both exhaust pipes at marked points with special tool 00 2 210 and deburr.

Unfasten screw connection. Slacken ball band clamp (1) from exhaust pipe.

Installation: Replace ball band clamps. Apply a thin coating of copper past to contact surface between ball and socket. When tightening down ball band clamps, press exhaust system against both manifold flanges in order to achieve gap-free installation. Install ball band clamp at right angles to exhaust pipe. Tightening torque 18 31 1A.

Release screws and remove holder (1).

Tightening torque 18 20 3A.

Release screws and remove holder (1).

Tightening torque 18 20 3A.

Lower and remove front muffler with assistance of a second person.

Installation:

Connect front muffler to rear muffler by means of clamps and align.

Centre clamps and tighten down.

Tightening torque 18 20 5A.
