BMW X5: Removing And Installing/Replacing Shaft For Head Restraint Adjustment

Necessary preliminary tasks:

Bend shaft (1) in direction of arrow.

Pull shaft (1) out of gear (2) and remove.

REMOVING AND INSTALLING/REPLACING GEARING FOR HEAD RESTRAINT ADJUSTMENT

Necessary preliminary tasks:

Remove retainer (1) on left and right.

Remove gearing (2) on left and right straight towards front.

Installation:

To ensure identical adjustment of gearings (2), carry out following work step on both gearings:

REMOVING AND INSTALLING/REPLACING OUTER COVER ON LEFT OR RIGHT FRONT SEAT

NOTE: Operation is identical to:

REMOVING AND INSTALLING/REPLACING INNER COVER ON LEFT OR RIGHT FRONT SEAT (COMFORT)

This operation is identical to:

Replacing cover on inner front seat (normal/electric).

REPLACING LUMBAR CUSHION ON LEFT OR RIGHT FRONT SEAT (COMFORT)

This operation is identical to:

Replacing lumbar cushion on front seat (normal/electric).

REMOVING AND INSTALLING/REPLACING ADJUSTING UNIT FOR BACKREST WIDTH ADJUSTMENT ON LEFT OR RIGHT FRONT SEAT

Necessary preliminary tasks:

Release cable tie (1).

Installation:

Lay cables (3) without kinks.

Disconnect plug connection (2) on drive.

Release rivets (1) on left and right and remove adjusting elements (3).

Release rivets (2) for drive.

Remove complete adjusting unit.

NOTE: Adjusting element (3), cables and drive form a single unit and can only be replaced completely.

REMOVING AND INSTALLING/REPLACING VALVE HOUSING FOR LUMBAR CUSHION (COMFORT)

This operation is identical to:

Replacing valve housing for lumbar cushion (normal/electric).

REMOVING AND INSTALLING/REPLACING UPPER REAR PANEL ON LEFT OR RIGHT FRONT SEAT BACKREST

This operation is described in:

Remove both rear panels on front seat backrest.

REMOVING AND INSTALLING/REPLACING LOWER REAR PANEL ON LEFT OR RIGHT FRONT SEAT BACKREST

This operation is described in:

Remove both rear panels on front seat backrest.

REMOVING AND INSTALLING/REPLACING BOTH REAR PANELS ON LEFT OR RIGHT FRONT SEAT BACKREST

Operation is shown on the left seat. When removing from the right seat, transpose the pull and striking sides accordingly.

Rear panel upper section:

  1. Grip between rear panel and backrest cover on door side until clip can be felt (do not pull).
  2. At same time, firmly punch towards middle of seat on inner side (tunnel side) at top.

    Upper retainers spring out of seat guide.

  3. Pull upper rear panel up out of lower guides.

NOTE:

  1. Retainer

Rear panel trim lower section:

  1. Grip between rear panel and backrest cover on door side until clip can be felt (do not pull).
  2. At same time, firmly punch towards middle of seat on inner side (tunnel side) at top.

    Upper retainers spring out of seat guide.

  3. Pull lower rear panel up out of lower guides

Unclip springs (1) on left and right.

Remove lower rear panel (3) upwards out of guide (2).

REMOVING AND INSTALLING/REPLACING HEAD RESTRAINT MOUNT ON LEFT OR RIGHT FRONT SEAT (COMFORT)

Necessary preliminary tasks:

Detach retaining points (1).

Release cable tie (1).

Disconnect plug connections (2).

Feed out AKS carrier (3) towards bottom.

Release screws (1).

Installation:

Guide pins (2) of head restraint mount must engage in openings on AKS carrier.

Feed out head restraint mount (3) sideways.
